Over the next few months Microsoft’s new operating system Windows Vista, will receive extensive media cover and you are bound to ask -
should we upgrade now?
Windows Vista is the next generation of Microsoft Windows and
represents over 5 years of development by Microsoft.
This effort by Microsoft has involved considerable changes in
the Windows System and it's Security.
These changes may have an impact on the software and
hardware you now use.
Plan your Vista transition:
It is wise to carefully plan any transition and test a new configuration
before using it as a critical piece of your business systems.
GeeDee recommends you:
- Consider the timing of any transition carefully – do you
need to move to Windows Vista immediately?
- Do you really need to be among the first to move to Vista?
- Would it be better to wait until others have proven the way forward and Microsoft
releases the appropriate patches and Service Packs?
- Experiment with Vista on a PC not critical to your business –
you should be satisfied that all the software and device drivers
you depend on work with Vista.
- Only make the move to Vista after you have verified that migrating
to Vista will not interfere with any of your key systems.
- This is the approach many businesses, corporations and governments are taking
to ensure there is no risk to their vital business systems.
Windows Vista has been extensively tested by Microsoft. However
today’s PC is a complex combination of hardware and software
from a variety of sources and no one can be 100% confident that
every single combination will work with Vista in every circumstance.

Taking into account the above weblinks we still believe
that Vista, and the new features of Office 2007, will deliver
a large range of benefits to all personal computer users.
However, as many with other suppliers and industry experts, we recommend general caution when planning an upgrade
to ensure that the additional costs can be offset by productivity improvements in the office.
This is very important because Vista has many new 3D graphics capabilities that require fast/new
processors, new 3D video cards and suitable monitors.
We know that many real estate businesses today are using computers that would not be suitable today.
All current press reports indicate that many large organisations are holding back
upgrades until stability is proven and the benefits are linked to application improvements such as Office 2007.
NOTE: If you are buying a new PC in the not to distant future, make sure that its
loaded with XP, but with a free Vista upgrade voucher as part
of the deal.
Most PC retailers are still providing PCs with XP installed with the option of a
free Vista upgrade in the future.
Disclaimer:
As with Microsoft Windows XP, GeeDee
recommends the
Vista Business Editions for
smoother networking setup and communication!
If you do upgrade in the next few months, don’t be surprised if the odd general problem is experienced
as there is always a price to pay for being the first!
We have done our best to ensure 'Vista Readiness" but we cannot guarantee that
there won't be technical issues that might arise from time to time.
