iPads and Android tablets can’t run Windows apps locally, but they easily access a Windows desktop remotely — even with a physical keyboard.
Microsoft recently launched their own official Remote Desktop app for iOS and Android devices. There are many free iOS and Android options to choose from. One of my favorites is the app Wyse PocketCloud Remote.
Microsoft’s Remote Desktop
This app is a gift to businesses. To set this up, please follow this guide. Microsoft now offers official Remote Desktop apps for iPad and iPhone as well as Android tablets and smartphones.
To connect, you’ll have to set up port-forwarding in your modem if you want to access your Windows desktop from outside your offices local network. You could also set up a TeamViewer or Chrome Remote Desktop — either way you’ll have to do a little footwork or enlist your local IT persons help.
Remote access for GeeDee Desktop is an easy process and is very useful if on the road or you are wanting to work from home / holiday.
To set this up, we just require access to your office’s Modem Router. This can be done from any PC.
NOTE – Sometimes your IT person may have changed the login password in your Modem Router. Please confirm if they have altered this or perhaps have this information written down for reference. This login information will greatly assist GeeDee Tech Support Staff allowing this remote access feature.
How To Forward Ports on Your Router
Thankfully there are some easy guides to assist with this. Namely, http://portforward.com/english/routers/port_forwarding/
Follow below steps. But first, please be sure to go and note down the make and model of your particular internet modem (See sticker under the device).
Select the above link:
- (1) Select your modem name
- (2) Click on cross in Top Right to close advert.
- (3) Select model number for your modem
- (4) Select the letter "R" from the A to Z list and then select Remote Desktop.
You will now have the step-by-step guide on how to add this information to your modem.
Sometimes the difficult part here is tracking your IT person down for your modem's password that they may have altered. You will require your modem's User Name and Password to access and add remote access information.
Techno Brief if you wish to get started - We’ll go over the process quickly here. For more detailed help, see link above for port forwarding. When you follow the above link, ensure that you forward TCP port 3389 to your offices computer IP address that you are wanting to connect to.
Locating your IP address
Before you start you first need to locate the IP address of the computer you wish to connect to. To do this, Open the Control Panel, click View network status and tasks OR Network and Sharing Center , and click the name of your current connection (Local Area Connection) to the right of Connections.
Click the Details button and note the number displayed to the right of IPv4 Address (See below example).
Help in Setting Up Access
There are a couple of other free methods that require little configuration. Only installation of software is typically required. For software installations or Remote Desktop Port Forwarding, your IT person can greatly assist in this matter or for a standard nominal fee we can provide assistance and add the information for several PCs in your office.
The Free Remote Options
TeamViewer: TeamViewer offers an easy-to-use, easy-to-set-up option. This program can be used to set up as a persistent server so you can connect remotely. TeamViewer doesn’t require any port-forwarding or messing with server settings — all you need is your ID and password to connect. This program’s simplicity and ease-of-use makes it an ideal remote solution.
The ideal way to setup TeamViewer is to install the "unattended access" method. After installing this full TeamViewer client, it provides you permanent remote access to a computer. As long as your computer is on, you’ll be able to access it remotely. You can now remotely connect from an Android or iOS device.

Chrome Remote Desktop: There’s a good chance both your device and your Work PC already have Google’s Chrome browser installed on your computers. If you do, you could use Chrome Remote Desktop app to connect to them remotely. Advice, this browser method is a little slower than Microsoft's Remote Desktop and TeamViewer, but again, the benefit is that it requires zero Port Forwarding and modem configuration.
To remotely connect, both devices need to have the Chrome Remote Desktop app installed. On your work PC that you wish to access you will need to open the Chrome Remote Desktop app from your new tab page and click Enable remote connections.
